        "content": "<p>Weightlifters dominate best athlete awards<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Weightlifters ended the badminton squad&apos;s long-<br>\nheld grip on the best national athletes contest by clinching four<br>\nawards yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>A panel of selectors comprising sports figures and journalists<br>\nnamed world champion Winarni the best female athlete of the year,<br>\nedging out past winner and the country&apos;s best tennis player ever<br>\nYayuk Basuki, fellow lifter Patmawati, top cyclist Nurhayati, and<br>\nmiddle and long-distance runner Supriyati Sutono.<\/p>\n<p>Winarni won two golds with record-breaking marks in the 50-<br>\nkilogram division of the World Weightlifting Championships in<br>\nChiang Mai, Thailand, last December.<\/p>\n<p>Badminton players, who took four awards in last year&apos;s<br>\ncontest, got a consolation as world doubles champions Chandra<br>\nWijaya and Sigit Budiarto shared the best male athlete award.<\/p>\n<p>Weightlifting coach Imron Rosidi collected the best coach of<br>\nthe year trophy, beating colleague Harry Wibowo, badminton<br>\ncoaches Christian Hadinata and Atik Jauhari and cycling trainers<br>\nWahyudi and Endang Subagyo.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Indriyani was another athlete from the muscular sport to<br>\ngo home a winner. The female lifter, who triumphed in the 46kg<br>\ncategory of the 19th Southeast Asian Games here in a world-<br>\nequaling lift, outshone junior chess player Taufik Halai, Formula<br>\n3 driver Ananda Mikola, Fed Cup member Wukirasih Sawondari and<br>\nprofessional boxer Andrian Kaspari in the most promising athlete<br>\ncategory.<\/p>\n<p>The late Soesilo Soedarman completed weightlifting&apos;s haul with<br>\nthe best prime mover tag, thanks to his successful tenure as the<br>\nchairman of the Indonesian Weightlifting, Powerlifting and<br>\nBodybuilding Association.<\/p>\n<p>The national dragon boat team was voted the best men&apos;s team,<br>\neclipsing the men&apos;s bridge team which won the Far East Bridge<br>\nFederation championship title last year, the volleyball team, the<br>\ntennis team and the softball team.<\/p>\n<p>The best women&apos;s team went to the national tennis team which,<br>\ndespite the absence of regular backbone Yayuk, won the women&apos;s<br>\nteam gold medal in the SEA Games.<\/p>\n<p>State Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Agung Laksono<br>\nattended the awards presentation organized by the Jakarta<br>\nassociation of sports journalists yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The association first gave out the awards in 1971.
