        "content": "<p>'Weather forecasts not good enough'<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The accuracy of weather forecasts by the Agency<br>\nfor Meteorology and Geophysics is only between 70 and 85 percent,<br>\na cabinet minister acknowledged yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>This level is still far below the ideal, which is between 90<br>\nand 95 percent, Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto<br>\nsaid at an official celebration of the 45th World Meteorology<br>\nDay.<\/p>\n<p>\"Indonesia should be able to develop technology to improve its<br>\naccuracy; otherwise all these weather forecasts will be useless,\"<br>\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the government would try to increase the<br>\nsophistication of meteorological technology so that the weather<br>\nforecasts aired by local TV stations in the evenings would be<br>\nmore dependable.<\/p>\n<p>Official statistics show that the meteorology and geophysics<br>\nagency currently has 160 stations throughout the country, whereas<br>\nideally there would be 400.<\/p>\n<p>The government is determined to double the number of stations<br>\nby 1999, when the current sixth Five Year Plan, (Repelita VI),<br>\ncomes to an end, the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia was modernizing its meteorological and geophysics<br>\nequipment, he said, especially that which is used for monitoring<br>\nearthquakes.<\/p>\n<p>Haryanto said that in anticipation of prolonged drought this<br>\nyear, the government planned to start creating artificial rain<br>\nlater this month in several areas.<\/p>\n<p>The next dry season is expected to start in April. The agency<br>\nhas predicted a long and severe drought that may force the<br>\ngovernment to import rice.<\/p>\n<p>Haryanto said the government had provided Rp 2.5 billion<br>\n(US$1.1 million) for the cloud seeding program.<\/p>\n<p>The main purpose of the program is to fill reservoirs vital<br>\nfor irrigation of rice-producing areas, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The program was also premised, he said, on the fact that the<br>\nclimate had been quite unpredictable over the past four years.<br>\n(29)<\/p>",
