Weapons offered at Police Expo 2001<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An exhibition of police and security equipment
\nopened here on Thursday amid growing concerns over poor security
\nenforcement and widespread ownership of illegal firearms in the
\ncapital.<\/p>\n
Some 60 exhibitors are participating in the three-day Police
\nExpo 2001 at Istora Senayan sports center, Central Jakarta.
\nExhibitors include police units, weapons supply companies and
\nsecurity consultants.<\/p>\n
At least five companies exhibiting are offering discount
\nfirearms for the duration of the event.<\/p>\n
\"The special price of Rp 20 million is only offered during the
\nexhibition. Normally this Korean-made gas pistol is worth Rp 27
\nmillion,\" a counter attendant, Fitter Firdaus, said.<\/p>\n
The company also offers automatic hunting rifles and pistols
\nthat fire rubber and blank ammunition.<\/p>\n
\"With the cash and carry service, we will take care of the
\nlicense,\" he said.<\/p>\n
No pistols capable of firing live bullets are offered at the
\nexpo.<\/p>\n
At another counter, Novi said her company mostly offered
\nproducts made by Walther, Colt and Smith & Wesson, but said they
\ndid not sell the products directly to visitors during the
\nexhibition.<\/p>\n
\"After registering their names here, we suggest that those who
\nare interested go to our office for further purchase procedures,\"
\nNovi said, adding that six people had registered their names in
\nthe first few hours after the counter opened on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Novi said the office would then arrange for the buyers to take
\na psychological test and fulfill other license requirements.<\/p>\n
One visitor who had just registered his name on the list said
\nthat he was curious about the procedures involved in obtaining a
\ngun license.<\/p>\n
\"It seems too easy. I talked to a counter attendant who
\npersuaded me to use a 'short cut'. He promised to take care of
\neverything,\" said the man, who claimed to be an official from the
\nMinistry of Home Affairs.<\/p>\n
National Police secretary-general Comr. Gen. Yun Mulyana said
\nthat firearms and other security equipment were on display at the
\nexhibition for the benefit of the public.<\/p>\n
\"We want to disseminate information to the public about our
\nworks and provide basic knowledge for those who want to protect
\nthemselves with various types of security equipment,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"This kind of exhibition will help reduce the incidence of
\nillegal ownership of firearms as people will be assisted in the
\nselection of quality and appropriate weapons and will be assisted
\nin obtaining licenses for the firearms,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The illegal ownership of weapons has been a major headache for
\npolice. Through the Sapu Jagat operation started early this
\nmonth, police have confiscated at least 95 weapons. Many more,
\nhowever, are believed to be on the streets.<\/p>\n
Other displays at the exhibition attracting considerable
\nattention include the driving simulator and the computerized
