'We have to send unskilled workers homes'<\/p>\n
Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso has vowed to prevent unskilled migrants
\nfrom entering the city after the Idul Fitri celebrations. The
\nJakarta Post talked to some residents about the policy.<\/p>\n
Tony Wibowo, 31, works for a manufacturing company in Meruya,
\nWest Jakarta. He lives with his family in Kedoya, also in West
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Personally, I agree with Sutiyoso's policy of not allowing
\nunskilled migrants to come here. They will only cause more
\nproblems for the city. Ubiquitous street children, beggars and
\nthugs are just some examples of how people resorting to
\nantisocial behavior when they cannot find a decent job.<\/p>\n
I think that the informal sector in the city is already
\novercrowded. With its rapid development, Jakarta is in need of
\npeople with higher qualifications to fill skilled positions in
\nbusinesses, rather than unskilled ones.<\/p>\n
Pingkan, in her 20s, works as an English teacher for a private
\nschool on Jl. Dewi Sartika in East Jakarta. She resides in
\nJatibening, Bekasi.<\/p>\n
That's a good policy. We have to stop the influx of unskilled
\nmigrants into the city. If necessary, we have to send back the
\nunskilled migrants to their hometowns.<\/p>\n
The administration must convince these migrants that living in
\ntheir hometowns would be much better than staying here in poor
\nliving conditions.<\/p>\n
It's true that their are relatively more jobs in Jakarta than
\nin other regions of the country, but most of the jobs here
\nrequire greater skills and expertise.<\/p>\n
Unskilled people won't be able to meet such high standards and
\nwill end up jobless here. You can imagine how tough the
\nrequirements for jobs here are when even university graduates
\nfind it difficult to find employment.<\/p>\n
With education of, let's say, up to senior high school level,
\nwhat expertise and skills can we expect from these unskilled
\nmigrants?\"<\/p>\n
