'We have the right to seek a better livelihood'<\/p>\n
People from less-developed areas continue to flock to Jakarta
\nseeking work, as an estimated 70 percent of the nation's money is
\ncirculating in the capital. However, the administration has
\nprohibited people who have no permanent job or residence from
\nsettling in Jakarta after the Idul Fitri holiday. The Jakarta
\nPost asked a few residents what they thought about the policy.<\/p>\n
Edy, 33, is a freelance copywriter. He lives in Pulomas, East
\nJakarta with his family:<\/p>\n
I understand that the policy is aimed at curbing the
\npopulation explosion in this already-crowded city. A greater
\npopulation would only increase social conflict here.<\/p>\n
However, such a consideration cannot justify a policy whereby
\npeople are banned from entering the city. There must be an
\nalternative solution, like creating job opportunities in other
\nareas in the country. Remember, people have the constitutional
\nright to seek a better livelihood.<\/p>\n
Johan Sarjono, 30, is a reporter with Elshinta radio. He lives
\nin Prumpung, East Jakarta:<\/p>\n
As the city's leader, Governor Sutiyoso has the power to
\nprohibit people from coming to the capital. But, I don't think
\nthis step alone will curb the massive influx of job seekers to
\nthe capital. The administration will find it difficult to
\ndifferentiate between old-timers and newcomers.<\/p>\n
Besides, I observed at Bakauheni Port in Lampung that many
\nyoung people are seeking work in industrial areas, like Bekasi,
\nTangerang, and Bogor. I wonder how the Jakarta administration can
\ncheck them.<\/p>\n
This is a problem that should be tackled in a comprehensive
\nmanner. Otherwise, efforts like the administration's policy will
\nbe completely ineffective.<\/p>\n
