We are being warned<\/p>\n
What is happening to this country? The multidimensional
\ncrisis has not ended, yet now we have been hit by disasters.<\/p>\n
Within a week, flood in five provinces has inundated thousands
\nof houses and thousands of hectares of rice fields and has forced
\nthousands of people to evacuate. Hundreds of people have lost
\ntheir homes because of fire while communal clashes in some
\nprovinces have compelled thousands to seek refuge.<\/p>\n
Some of the disasters were clearly caused by human
\ncarelessness, uncontrolled illegal logging, and sand quarrying.<\/p>\n
Others say these are warnings from \"Someone up there\". We are
\nbeing warned for our failure to thank God for His graces and for
\nour failure to manage the state and the government.<\/p>\n
Since the crisis hit Indonesia in mid-1997, things have grown
\nworse. Unemployment has increased, purchasing power has weakened,
\nwhile foreign debts are mounting. Crime rate has increased and
\ncorruption pervades all levels -- top to bottom.<\/p>\n
Sad to say, people have grown quite familiar with these
\ndisasters as they occur almost every day -- disasters that have
\ncaused thousands of people to lose their homes and their future.
\nThese people have begun fasting even before Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
Jihad, of course, should not only be launched for the Afghan
\npeople who are facing U.S. military strikes. It is also necessary
\nto help our own suffering people.<\/p>\n
