WBC pledges support for RI's pro boxing<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The World Boxing Council (WBC) has offered to
\nassist Indonesia with the composition of standards for
\nprofessional boxing management and in the development of
\nprofessional boxers, the council's president, Jose Sulaiman, told
\na media briefing at the Borobudur Hotel on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Sulaiman, from Mexico, arrived her on Saturday morning to
\nattend a meeting with the WBC finance committee, but he was keen
\nto share his vision of increasing the council's role in the
\ndevelopment of professional boxing in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"In Indonesia, there hasn't really been professional boxing.
\nIt's not handled properly. I've come here with an infrastructure
\nand the ability to teach how professional boxing should be
\nhandled.<\/p>\n
\"I will help to do many things for this country, and I plan to
\nput it at the highest level in the world of professional boxing.\"<\/p>\n
Sulaiman said the WBC offered its help to develop medical
\naccess for boxers, new technical skills and tactics, and to
\nestablish a boxing school or high-tech gymnasium.<\/p>\n
\"You need a national plan for amateur boxing so that a boxer
\nwill not only read about fighting, fight in the streets and then
\ngo into the ring. You need a good structure for the
\nadministration of boxing.<\/p>\n
\"So you need to invite medics and good promoters here who want
\nto build instead of destroy, and invest in the boxers' futures.\"<\/p>\n
\"We can provide a technical group, knowledge, strong promoters
\nand anything else required to help this country. I also want to
\ncreate a world boxing school. We are now in the process of
\nbuilding modern gyms applying the latest technology. We have set
\nup some of them in South Africa, Spain, Mexico and Argentina,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Sulaiman said he would meet with authorities to discuss the
\npossibility of establishing a boxing school in Indonesia. He is
\nscheduled to meet Endro Sumardjo, the expert staff member of the
\nminister of national education, on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"The WBC will pay for all the gym equipment. We'll ask the
\nauthorities to provide the property, a building, and we'll
\ninstall everything inside it.\"<\/p>\n
Sulaiman said that Indonesia would not have difficulties
\nattracting sponsors for financial support if its professional
\nboxing already had a good structure.<\/p>\n
The WBC was founded in 1963 and has 161 member countries.<\/p>\n
It was established to control world title fights; determine
\nmonthly ratings; provide medical programs and life insurance for
\nboxers; apply rules and regulations for professional boxing;
\nsponsor a sports medicine foundation; promote training for
\nboxers, referees, judges, doctors specializing in boxing and
\ntrainers; implement pension plans; conduct a world boxing school;
\nand bestow awards.<\/p>\n
Manahan Situmorang, chairman of the Indonesian Boxing
\nAssociation (ATI) -- one of the two professional boxing
\nassociations in this country, along with the Indonesian Boxing
\nCommittee (KTI) -- said his association would be prepared to
\ncooperate with the WBC in setting up and managing a boxing
\nschool.<\/p>\n
\"We are trying to work with the government. If the plan can be
\nrealized, we don't mind helping to manage the gym so that any
\nboxers and trainers can use it,\" he said after the conference.<\/p>\n
Manahan also said that the ATI would request the WBC's support
\nto stage a WBC intercontinental bout in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"We'll also ask Sulaiman to allow Indonesian professional
\nboxers to get a WBC ranking, or at least a WBC intercontinental
\nranking,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Manahan added that the ATI also asked the WBC to provide
\nforeign coaches who had trained world champions, as well as
