        "content": "<p>WBA hosts WBA convention<\/p>\n<p>Wahyoe Boediwardhana, The Jakarta Post, Denpasar, Bali<\/p>\n<p>The 82nd convention of the World Boxing Association has begun on<br>\nTuesday in Bali, with its Indonesian affiliate saying it would<br>\nuse the opportunity to push for the country's prospect boxers to<br>\nmove up to the international scene.<\/p>\n<p>WBA President Gilberto Mendoza, accompanied by Minister of<br>\nManpower Jacob Nuwa Wea, officially opened the two-day convention<br>\nat the Discovery Kartika Plaza in Kuta, to where 50 of 120 member<br>\ncountries have sent their representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Participants have converged on Bali from Argentina, Australia,<br>\nBrazil, Colombia, Czech, Germany, the Honduras, Japan, Mexico,<br>\nthe Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama, Spain, Sweden and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Eddy Pirih, an official of the WBA-affiliate Indonesian Boxing<br>\nCommittee (KTI), hoped that they could use the occasion to lobby<br>\nboxing promoters.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will ask that they pay attention to the skills of our<br>\nboxers and give them the chance to fight in the international<br>\narena,\" Eddy said after the opening ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Eddy, himself a promoter, said the annual convention would<br>\nshed light on professional boxing rules, as well as discuss the<br>\nagenda for the next meeting, the venue of which has yet to be<br>\ndecided.<\/p>\n<p>The Bali meet could have seen the arrival of renowned, world-<br>\nclass promoter Don King, but he did not join the convention<br>\nbecause of a U.S. government advisory against traveling to<br>\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The two title fights for Thursday and Friday were scheduled on<br>\nthe eve of the convention.<\/p>\n<p>Daudy Bahari of Indonesia and Kiatchai Coin of Thailand will<br>\nfight on Thursday for the Pacific Asia Boxing Association (PABA)<br>\njunior welterweight title, while Indonesian featherweight Chris<br>\nJhon will fight for the WBA crown on Friday against Oscar Leon of<br>\nColombia.<\/p>\n<p>Pino Bahari, the match organizer, said the WBA title was up<br>\nfor grabs after incumbent champion Derrick Gainer of the U.S.<br>\nsigned up for the International Boxing Federation (IBF)<br>\nchampionship.<\/p>",
