WB vows to continue assisting RI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The World Bank will continue to assist
\nIndonesia, which has put loans from the bank to good use, the
\nbank's president, James D. Wolfensohn, said.<\/p>\n
The World Bank is the real partner of Indonesia in its
\ndevelopment program, he told the press after meeting with
\nPresident Soeharto at Merdeka Palace on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Wolfensohn said he underlined the importance of developing
\nsmall and medium-scale industries during the meeting. He also
\nstressed expanding the private sector's role in development in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
He said the World Bank hopes Indonesia will continue its
\nprogram of poverty alleviation.<\/p>\n
\"We'll support all the initiatives taken by the Indonesian
\ngovernment in alleviating the poverty,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that efforts should be intensified to create openness,
\nto sharpen the competitive edge and to address environmental
\nissues.<\/p>\n
He also discussed the South-South cooperation program
\nPresident Soeharto established while chairman of the Non-Aligned
\nMovement. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund
\nsupport these initiatives, Wolfensohn said.<\/p>\n
He said he discussed the economic overheating still troubling
\nIndonesia with the President.<\/p>\n
\"I stressed that Indonesia is not the only country facing the
\nissue. Almost all countries with high economic growth are facing
\nit,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Asked about Indonesia's request for US$5.2 billion in loans
\nfrom the Consultative Group on Indonesia (CGI) this year, the
\nWorld Bank president said he expected the group to reach a
\npositive agreement like the one made last year.<\/p>\n
\"I cannot comment further on this before we hold the CGI
\nmeeting,\" he said. (13)<\/p>",
