WB to hold forestry seminar<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The World Bank's office in Jakarta will hold a
\nhigh-level seminar on forestry next Wednesday to find solutions
\nto the ongoing problems confronting Indonesia's forestry sector.<\/p>\n
World Bank environmental specialist Thomas Walton said in a
\nstatement on Friday the seminar would be attended by members of
\nthe government, donors, agencies and non-governmental
\norganizations and other stakeholders in forestry.<\/p>\n
\"This seminar is the first time all major stakeholders in
\nforestry will convene to discuss how we can work together to
\novercome the ongoing problems confronting Indonesia's forests, a
\nvaluable natural resource that is disappearing at alarming
\nrates,\" Walton said.<\/p>\n
He said the great concern over Indonesia's shrinking forests
\nat the last meeting of the Consultative Group of Indonesia in
\nJuly 1999 prompted the follow-up seminar.<\/p>\n
Nearly 17 million hectares of Indonesian forests have
\ndisappeared in the last 12 years, with an annual deforestation
\nrate estimated to be 1.5 million hectares, Walton said.<\/p>\n
\"At this meeting, we would like to establish the foundation
\nfor a new forest vision for Indonesia and do so in a way that
\ninvolves all of the stakeholders concerned and earn their
\ncommitment and support,\" Walton said.<\/p>\n
