        "content": "<p>WB loan Bangkok<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AFP): The World Bank said yesterday it had approved a<br>\nUS$145 million loan to Thailand's Metropolitan Electricity<br>\nAuthority (MEA) to upgrade the efficiency of the distribution<br>\nsystem in Bangkok.<\/p>\n<p>The World Bank said the loan was part of its efforts \"to<br>\nfoster more efficient and environmentally friendly growth in<br>\nyears ahead,\" as rapid growth in East Asia has led to pollution,<br>\nland degradation and deforestation.<\/p>\n<p>\"By improving the power supply in an environmentally<br>\nsustainable manner, the project will benefit Bangkok's<br>\ndevelopment and ensure Thailand's continued economic growth,\" the<br>\nbank said in a statement received here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Improving system reliability will also translate into<br>\nsubstantial economic benefits, especially for industrial and<br>\ncommercial consumers, it said.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand's demand for power has grown at about 12 percent a<br>\nyear over the last decade, the bank said.<\/p>",
