        "content": "<p>WB grants $17m for ozone projects<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The World Bank has agreed to provide US$17<br>\nmillion in grants to 18 Indonesian companies for the protection<br>\nof the ozone layer.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin Fisher, head of the World Bank&apos;s unit for social and<br>\nenvironmental impact, was quoted by the Antara news agency as<br>\nsaying yesterday that the agreement, which was signed in<br>\nWashington D.C. on Nov. 10, 1994, is part of the bank&apos;s $90<br>\nmillion Montreal Protocol loan to 12 developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>Under the agreement, the companies will be required to replace<br>\nozone-destroying techniques and materials, such as CFCs, with<br>\nmore environmentally-friendly methods. CFCs are still widely used<br>\nin Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Following the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the<br>\nMinistry of Environment and Bank Uppindo on the implementation of<br>\nthe ozone project, Fisher explained that the grant would be used<br>\nfor the development of sub-projects, investments, and technical<br>\nassistance.<\/p>\n<p>PT Sucofindo, a national consultant company, will draft the<br>\nproposals for the sub-projects and Bank Uppindo will be<br>\nresponsible for the management of the grant, including its<br>\ndistribution to the 18 companies.<\/p>\n<p>Fisher said Bank Uppindo would receive $50,000 worth of<br>\ntechnical assistance to do their job, which will include<br>\nmonitoring the project&apos;s implementation.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Environment, he said, would receive $50,000<br>\nfor promotion, project selection and to conduct workshops<br>\nintroducing ozone-friendly technologies.<\/p>\n<p>According to Aca Sugandhi, an assistant to the state minister<br>\nof environment, the 18 companies were selected by the National<br>\nDevelopment and Planning Board (Bappenas), the ministries of<br>\nfinance, industry, trade and foreign affairs, under the<br>\ncoordination of the Ministry of Environment.(pwn)<\/p>",
