'Water rate hike is burdensome'<\/p>\n
Like it or not, Jakartans have to see automatic water rate hikes
\nby between 4 and 16 percent every six months for the next five
\nyears. The announcement was made more than 10 days after it took
\neffect. The Jakarta Post asked residents about their opinion on
\nthe issue.<\/p>\n
Ellya, 25, works as a marketing staffer with a car showroom in
\nMatraman in East Jakarta. She lives in Salemba Tengah, Central
\nJakarta with her family:<\/p>\n
What hike? Water tariff? I have not heard about the increase.
\nIf it's true, that will definitely add more burden to my family's
\nbudget as we don't use ground water.<\/p>\n
I could not accept the reason that it was meant to pay the
\ndebt. The reason doesn't make sense to me.<\/p>\n
For me, the most important thing is an improvement in the
\nservice. With water disruption almost every day, please don't
\never talk about raising the water tariff.<\/p>\n
Aprilina, 28, is a public relation consultant, whose office on
\nJl. Sudirman, Central Jakarta. She lives in Condet subdistrict,
\nEast Jakarta:<\/p>\n
To tell you the truth, I have no interest to discuss about the
\nincrease of tapwater tariff. I use groundwater for our daily
\nneed, so I won't be much affected.<\/p>\n
But I must say that the continuous water hike is not fair
\nbecause the operators have not been able to improve their
\nservices -- water supply is not always available and its quality
\nis still poor.<\/p>\n
Maybe the customers will accept the water hike if they also
\nsee continuous effort to improve service.<\/p>\n
I think the hike will also burden low-income costumers, such
\nas the low-ranking civil servants.<\/p>\n
Moreover, in the economic situation like this, no companies
\nwould be able to increase significant amount of salaries for
\ntheir employees.<\/p>\n
It's more wise for the city administration to raise water
\ntariff only for rich customers.<\/p>\n
