Despite the high ratings many of these shows
earn, people are concerned about their possible impact on
society. The Jakarta Post discussed the issue with several
residents.

Wawan Kurniawan, 27, is a teacher at a private high school in
Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. He lives in Rawamangun, East
Jakarta, with his wife:

I think crime shows on TV have a negative impact on people,
particularly young people who watch these programs with much
enthusiasm. I'm afraid that by being exposed to such programs,
they will resort to violence.

In a larger context, I'm worried that people may start to
justify acts of violence by blaming the influence of these crime
shows.

I disagree with the airing of violent shows. It is unnecessary
to show vulgar pictures, and it will only make our country
uncivilized.

I suggest TV stations edit the shows. TV stations must also
consider the broadcast times as these programs are available
nationwide.

Delila, 29, works at a company in South Jakarta. She lives in
Radio Dalam, South Jakarta, with her family:

I think criminals should be treated harshly, like they are on
these TV crime shows. However, TV stations must reduce the
vulgarity in the shows. They shouldn't just pursue ratings.

Crime shows have gotten more and more vulgar in the reform
era. They didn't have programs like this during the New Order.

Imported movies are censored, so why should local shows like
these be left uncensored?

I'm afraid children will copy the scenes they see on TV. It's
possible.

I also wonder about the importance of crime shows since they
don't necessarily deter criminals. Drugs, rape and other crimes
are all increasing. Maybe criminals are watching the shows to
learn new ways to commit crimes.

Dati, 32, is a housewife who lives in Cijantung, East Jakarta:

I think TV crime shows are very good for housewives who spend
most of their time at home. They give us information about what
is going on out there. This information is useful every time I go
out.

But now I tend to be negative and suspicious of other people,
particularly when I'm on public transportation. The more I watch
crime shows, the more frightened I become.

It's hard to say if I agree or disagree with the shows. On the
one hand, the facts show that crime is increasing. On the other
hand, these shows scare me and have affected me psychologically.

-- Leo Wahyudi S.
",
