A catastrophic landslide of accumulated waste at Bantargebang waste treatment facility in Bekasi, West Java on 8 March 2026 killed four people and injured five others, allegedly caused by extreme rainfall that saturated the waste pile. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung confirmed that the incident affected a 40-metre stretch of the operational road and Ciketing River, and Zone 4A operations have been temporarily suspended as mitigation whilst waste shipments are redirected to alternative zones.",

One was a woman selling near the site,
positioned somewhat at the edge of the road, not directly in the waste
area, but she was affected as the landslide expanded,” he explained.

Pramono confirmed that deceased victims employed as Public
Infrastructure and Facilities Support Officers (PJLP) under the
Environmental Services Agency would receive compensation from the
Employment Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan).

Medical treatment costs for five injured persons would be fully
covered by the Jakarta Provincial Government.

As a precautionary measure, operations in Zone 4A have been
temporarily suspended.
