        "content": "<p>Technology group W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 has begun validating its latest 100%\nhydrogen engine, which is directly connected to Spain\u2019s national\nelectricity grid in Bermeo, in the north of the country. The trial is\nthe world\u2019s first demonstration of a large-scale pure hydrogen engine\nsupplying power to a national grid. The step is considered a significant\nmilestone in the development of power generation technology based on\nsustainable fuels. Through this test, W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 seeks to prove that\ngenerating engines can operate using 100% hydrogen whilst supporting\nenergy systems increasingly dominated by renewable sources. The test is\nbeing conducted using the W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 31H2 engine, part of the W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 31\nplatform, one of the world\u2019s most efficient four-stroke multi-fuel\nengines. The engine is described as the world\u2019s largest pure hydrogen\nengine currently undergoing performance verification in Bermeo. Rasmus\nTeir, Director of Strategy, Technology &amp; Decarbonisation at\nW\u00e4rtsil\u00e4, said hydrogen technology development is a vital part of\naddressing the global energy transition challenge. \u201cThis is a test for\nthe future of renewable energy. As countries rapidly scale up wind and\nsolar power, one of the biggest challenges facing the energy transition\nis how to maintain a reliable and sustainable electricity supply during\nperiods of low renewable generation or demand spikes. Currently, our\nW\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 31H2 hydrogen engine is operating on 100% hydrogen and\nsupplying power to Spain\u2019s national grid, demonstrating that large-scale\nhydrogen engines can provide flexible, schedulable sustainable power to\nsupport future renewable energy systems,\u201d he stated. According to Teir,\nthe successful trial shows that hydrogen technology is ready for\ncommercial use. The next challenge is accelerating the development of\nregulations, investment, and infrastructure that support the utilisation\nof hydrogen as part of the future energy system. \u201cWe have proven that\nthis technology is ready. Now, the focus must be on creating the right\nenvironment to scale it up, supported by firm regulation, investment\nclarity, and the necessary infrastructure to accelerate the growth of\nrenewable energy and sustainable fuels like hydrogen. The technology is\nhere \u2013 now it is time to scale it up,\u201d Teir said. Green hydrogen is\nconsidered to have a strategic role in low-carbon energy systems because\nit produces no carbon emissions when used. Additionally, hydrogen can\nfunction as an energy storage medium from solar and wind generation and\nbe reused when electricity production from renewables declines. The\ntechnology\u2019s presence becomes increasingly relevant as global renewable\nenergy capacity is projected to reach nearly 4,600 gigawatts (GW) by\n2030. Under such conditions, electricity systems require flexible\nresources capable of maintaining grid stability when renewable energy\nsupply fluctuates. Spain was chosen as the test location because it is\none of the countries aggressively developing renewable energy whilst\nreducing dependence on fossil fuels. In June 2026, a number of W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4\ncustomers from various countries also witnessed the engine\u2019s operation\nfirsthand as part of the commercial validation process. W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4\u2019s\ncommitment to hydrogen technology development has also been realised in\nIndonesia. In November 2025, W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 together with PLN Indonesia Power\nsuccessfully conducted a hydrogen blending test on a W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 50DF\nengine at the Pesanggaran Power Plant in Bali. In that test, the\nhydrogen blend reached 23% under partial load conditions and showed\nimproved combustion efficiency as well as reduced carbon emissions\ncompared to using pure natural gas. Kari Punnonen, Energy Business\nDirector Australasia at W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 Energy, said the tests in Spain and\nIndonesia demonstrate the flexibility of W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4\u2019s engine technology in\nsupporting the energy transition. \u201cDevelopments such as the Bermeo\nhydrogen trial and the Pesanggaran Bali hydrogen blending test highlight\nthe future-ready and fuel-flexible nature of W\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 engine technology.\nThrough close collaboration with our customers and partners in\nIndonesia, we are actively exploring how these capabilities can support\nIndonesia\u2019s transition towards clean energy,\u201d he said.
