Warships assemble in the Jakarta Bay<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Seventy-two Indonesian and foreign warships,
\nfrom frigates to destroyers, assembled in Jakarta Bay yesterday
\nin perhaps one of the largest gatherings of naval forces seen
\nsince the U.S led multinational forces in the Persian Gulf during
\nthe war against Iraq in 1991.<\/p>\n
The fleet review, inspected by President Soeharto, culminated
\nthe Indonesian Navy's Arung Samudra 1995 event commemorating 50
\nyears of independence.<\/p>\n
The two other main events on the Arung Samudra agenda, the
\ntall ship and yacht races, finished last week.<\/p>\n
President Soeharto, Vice President Try Sutrisno and other
\ndignitaries inspected the ships from the Indonesian Navy's
\nBarakuda and Kerapu respectively, both are fast patrol boats
\nbuilt by the state shipyard PT PAL.<\/p>\n
The slightly overcast weather did not dampen the spirit of the
\nfleet review, with some of the crew on board the Indonesian
\nwarships chanting Merdeka (Freedom) to greet Soeharto and his
\nentourage.<\/p>\n
Also on board the inspecting vessels were the 13 navy chiefs
\nof staff and dozens of senior naval officers from various other
\ncountries invited for the occasion.<\/p>\n
The dignitaries also sailed past 18 tall ships and over 100
\nyachts anchored off Tanjung Priok port.<\/p>\n
On board the Barakuda, the Indonesian head of state presented
\nthe President Soeharto Trophy to the captain of Dewa Ruci, the
\nIndonesian Navy's training sailing ship, which won the tall ship
\nrace.<\/p>\n
While sailing back to Tanjung Priok harbor after the
\ninspection, President Soeharto and the dignitaries were treated
\nto a golden formation flypast by helicopters based on Indonesian
\nand foreign warships.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Navy put virtually its entire fleet into the
\nreview, including the KRI Oswald Siahaan, KRI Nanggala, KRI
\nHasanuddin, KRI Imam Bonjol, and KRI Christina Martha Tiahahu.<\/p>\n
According to the list provided by Arung Samudra organizers,
\nthe foreign warships taking part included the USS Mobile Bay and
\nUSS Rodney M. Davis from the United States, the HMS Sheffield and
\nHMS Brambeleaf from the United Kingdom, the HMAS Darwin, HMAS
\nTorrens, HMAS Wollongung and HMAS Whyala from Australia, the JDS
\nMineyuki and JDS Hamayuke from Japan, the HrMS Van Nes and HrMS
\nVan Galen from the Netherlands, and the DD-116, FF-540 and AO-615
\nfrom China.<\/p>\n
Brunei sent the KDB Waspada and KDB Seteria, while Italy sent
\nthe San Agusto. New Zealand was represented by the HMNZS Waikato
\nand HMNZS Endeavour, Pakistan the PNS Nasr and PNS Shamshar, and
\nThailand the HTMS Chad Praya and HTMS Kraburi. (emb)<\/p>",
