The Waringinkurung landfill in Waringinkurung Village, Serang\nRegency, Banten, caught fire on Friday evening (28\/8). The flames first\nappeared around 6 p.m. local time and were spotted by residents\nreturning from collecting grass for livestock feed. Residents then\nreported the fire to the Waringinkurung Police so it could be\nextinguished.<\/p>\n
Waringinkurung Police Chief Inspector Hari Purwanto said officers\nconfirmed with local residents that the cause of the incident was\nunknown. Personnel went to the scene of the land fire, and efforts were\nunderway to put out the flames.<\/p>\n
Hari said the location\u2019s distance from residential areas meant that\nneither residents nor police personnel knew for certain what caused the\nlandfill to catch fire. The Waringinkurung landfill is a former red\nbrick manufacturing site that was later used by local residents as a\nwaste disposal area.<\/p>\n
According to Hari, extinguishing the fire at the Waringinkurung\nlandfill posed a particular challenge because it occurred during the dry\nseason. Moreover, the waste piles had grown high and were covered by\ntall grass. The fire had to be fully extinguished so that embers inside\nthe waste piles would not reignite.<\/p>\n
