Wardiman wants more research by universities<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman
\nDjojonegoro said on Saturday that the government supports the
\npublic call to intensify the university's role as a research
\ncenter.<\/p>\n
Wardiman told reporters at a ceremony commemorating the 45th
\nanniversary of the University of Indonesia, held in the
\nuniversity's complex in Depok, that in the first stage, his
\nministry will encourage the development of research among
\nlecturers in universities throughout Indonesia.<\/p>\n
"The government has so far cooperated with a number of
\nindustrial companies to finance research projects in
\nuniversities," he said.<\/p>\n
Wardiman said the development of research among lecturers is
\nexpected to enable the government to solve Indonesia's education
\nproblems, which deal mainly with human resources.<\/p>\n
Other efforts, Wardiman said, are to cooperate with foreign
\neducation agencies or universities in the research field.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Education and Culture has appointed the
\nUniversity of Indonesia as the first university to execute
\nresearch activities under sponsorship from the companies, he
\nsaid, adding that three other universities, the Institute of
\nTechnology Bandung, the Institute of Agriculture in Bogor and the
\nGadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, also have all the
\nrequirements to do the same.<\/p>\n
Saturday's ceremony was highlighted by a scientific oration
\nfrom Sudraji Sumapraja, professor of the School of Medicine from
\nthe university.<\/p>\n
Sudraji underlined the importance of a bigger role on the part
\nof industrial companies in increasing research activities in
\nuniversities. "Bio-technology research, especially in medical
\nscience, is badly needed to help find new cures for various
\nillnesses," he said.<\/p>\n
Wardiman agreed with Sudraji's statement and said that
\nresearch activities to be conducted by universities should be
\nthose which will have actual effects on society.<\/p>\n
"All research should be useful for the people and Indonesia,"
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
University of Indonesia (UI), established on Feb. 2 1950, has
\n11 schools, ranging from medical science, social and political
\nscience to law, with over 27,934 students.<\/p>\n
Rector of the university M.K. Tadjudin said that UI has
\ngraduated 50,000 students. (yns)<\/p>",
