Wardiman enlists Kadin for apprenticeship program<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government yesterday secured the
\nparticipation of the powerful Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and
\nIndustry (Kadin) in the high school industrial apprenticeship
\nprogram to be launched in July.<\/p>\n
Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro, who
\nsigned the agreement on the government's behalf, got more than he
\nbargained for because 32 industrial associations affiliated to
\nKadin will also be joining in the program.<\/p>\n
These associations include the Indonesian Forestry Society
\n(MPI), the Association of Electronic & Electrical Home Appliances
\nIndustry, and the Motor Vehicle Industry Association (Gaikindo).<\/p>\n
The government is launching the so-called dual education
\nsystem in July at many of its technical high schools.<\/p>\n
The system calls for a combination of theoretical as well as
\npractical knowledge. But for this the government needs the
\nsupport of industry to help students get exposure to the basic
\nindustrial experience.<\/p>\n
\"We are very grateful for Kadin's help in making the system
\nsucceed,\" Wardiman said in his speech during the signing
\nceremony. \"I hope this cooperation will be mutually beneficial.\"<\/p>\n
Kadin Chairman Aburizal Bakrie welcomed the agreement as part
\nof the industrial community's efforts at strengthening the
\nquality of Indonesian workers, which is vital to ensure
\nindustrial competitiveness.<\/p>\n
However, Aburizal, who is owner of the Bakrie business group,
\nquickly pointed out that there was no guarantee that these
\napprentices would eventually be employed at their place of
\ntraining.<\/p>\n
The agreement is Kadin's contribution to help schools in the
\ncountry produce skilled graduates so that they have a better
\nchance of getting good jobs, he told reporters after the signing
\nceremony.<\/p>\n
The system is also intended to improve the poor image that
\ntechnical high schools have had for a long time; that they are a
\nlast resort for junior high school graduates who are poor
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
Employers have, in the past, given preferential treatment to
\nordinary high school graduates rather than technical high school
\ngraduates because they were easier to train.<\/p>\n
Wardiman said all of this is changing with the industrial
\napprenticeships program. he said that the technical high schools,
\nwhich are four times more expensive to build, should become more
\nprestigious with the new scheme.<\/p>\n
The government is currently considering further tax incentives
\nto convince companies to join in the scheme. (01)<\/p>",
