NATO fighter jets from Poland have successfully intercepted a Russian\nmilitary reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, approximately 30\nkilometres off the coast of Warsaw. This incident is the latest in a\nseries of similar encounters involving Moscow\u2019s military aircraft.<\/p>\n
Quoting TVP World on Tuesday (1\/9\/2026), the Polish Minister of\nDefence, W\u0142adys\u0142aw Kosiniak-Kamysz, confirmed the event. The Il-20 type\njet was intercepted before noon north of \u0141eba, a coastal town in\nnorthern Poland.<\/p>\n
The Il-20 is known as a military reconnaissance aircraft specifically\nused to collect intelligence data regarding radar, communication, and\nair defence systems. However, Poland ensured that no violation of its\nterritory occurred, as the jet remained over international waters.<\/p>\n
\u201cRussia is once again testing our deterrence and air defence\nsystems,\u201d stated Kosiniak-Kamysz.<\/p>\n
In fact, the activity of Russian military aircraft manoeuvring near\nthe Polish Baltic coast has been reported to be increasing. Previously,\nin mid-July, Polish jets also had to intercept Russian air fleets for\nthree consecutive days, including Il-20 reconnaissance planes and Su-30\nfighter jets.<\/p>\n
Other interceptions of Il-20 aircraft also occurred in late July and\nduring several days in early August, although none entered Polish\nairspace. Such incidents have become more common since Moscow launched\nits full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, during which Russian\nmilitary aircraft frequently fly near NATO airspace without submitting\nofficial flight plans or activating their transponders.<\/p>\n
These dangerous, stealthy flights regularly force Polish and allied\nfighter jets to scramble for takeoff to identify and monitor the Russian\nfleets. Russian aerial military activity in the region is also being\nclosely monitored through NATO\u2019s Baltic Air Policing mission, where\nallied fighter jets routinely patrol to secure the airspace of Baltic\nnations.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Poland has now established a high state of alert regarding\npotential airspace violations after a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile fell\nin eastern Poland during a large-scale attack on Ukraine in late July.\nPolish officials revealed that the lethal missile carried a significant\namount of explosives.<\/p>\n
The missile reportedly exploded in a field near Tarnawa-Kolonia in\nthe eastern region, approximately 80 kilometres from the Ukrainian\nborder.
