`War against terror in SE Asia far from over'<\/p>\n

The war against terrorism in Southeast Asia is \"far from over\"
\ndespite the disruption of terrorist plots and the arrest of
\nseveral suspects, U.S. President George W. Bush and Singapore
\nPrime Minister Goh Chok Tong said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n
In a joint statement issued after a meeting in Washington on
\nTuesday, the two leaders noted that enhanced cooperation among
\nSoutheast Asian nations and countries outside the region has led
\nto the disruption of terror plots by members of the Jamaah
\nIslamiyah (JI) group.<\/p>\n
It also led to the arrest of dozens of members of the
\nSoutheast Asia-based JI, including some who were linked to last
\nyear's bombings in the Indonesian resort island of Bali in which
\n202 people from 21 countries were killed.<\/p>\n
Bush and Goh welcomed the progress in the investigations into
\nthe Bali attack, including the arrests of some of the suspects.<\/p>\n
\"However, the president and the prime minister agreed that the
\nwar against terrorism in Southeast Asia is far from over,\" said
\nthe statement, copies of which were issued in Singapore on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
\"The two leaders agreed to redouble their efforts to work with
\nother leaders in the region and through multilateral
\norganizations... to defeat terrorism,\" it said.<\/p>\n
\"They also reaffirmed their commitment to work with other
\nstates in Asia to achieve the complete, verifiable and
\nirreversible elimination of North Korea's nuclear weapons
\nprogram,\" it said.<\/p>\n
Singapore has detained 31 suspected JI members for various
\nalleged plots to blow up U.S. and other foreign targets in the
\ncity-state, as well as water pipelines and the defense ministry
\ncomplex.<\/p>\n
Similar arrests have also been carried out by authorities in
\nMalaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.<\/p>",
