        "content": "<p>Walhi regrets the killing of crocodile<\/p>\n<p>SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: The Indonesian Environmental Forum<br>\n(Walhi) regrets the killing of a rare giant crocodile (Crocodilus<br>\nporosus) in Bulungan regency, a local Walhi official said here<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Abrianto Amin said killing the crocodile did not solve any<br>\nproblems, including why crocodiles in the local habitat often<br>\nattacked people.<\/p>\n<p>\"It could be because its habitat has been disturbed,\" he was<br>\nquoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 6, Bulungan residents and local police killed a<br>\ngigantic crocodile measuring six meters in length and 2.5 meters<br>\nin diameter.<\/p>\n<p>The crocodile had attacked 14-year-old Mohtar, who was<br>\nswimming in the Kayan River.<\/p>\n<p>In Samarinda Seberang regency, residents have been hunting<br>\nanother crocodile which attacked Mangindara, 7, in Mahakam River.<\/p>\n<p>\"It is an indication that the habitat of the endangered<br>\nspecies has been disturbed and they have started to move to<br>\nsurrounding villages,\" Amin said.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s, Kayan River was known as a haven for crocodiles<br>\nin the region and people could easily see dozens of crocodiles<br>\nswimming in the river. There is also a tributary called Sungai<br>\nBuaya (Crocodile River).<\/p>\n<p>The species has been threatened with extinction because of<br>\nillegal hunting for its skin.
