Walhi celebrates 25th anniversary<\/p>\n
Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) executive director
\nChalid Muhammad (left) talks with former minister of the
\nenvironment Sonny Keraf during a ceremony held to celebrate the
\norganization's 25th anniversary.<\/p>\n
Chalid urged on Saturday environmental organizations to get a
\ngreater portion of the public involved in advocating
\nenvironmental issues.<\/p>\n
\"Entering its 25th year, Walhi intends to transform the
\ncountry's environmental movement into deep-rooted and sustainable
\nactivism. Environmental issues will always be a part of a social
\nmovement,\" he said in his speech.<\/p>\n
\"Environmental issues should no longer be the sole concern of
\nNGOs, but should be the concern of all Indonesians,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Noted politicians, activists and celebrities attended the
\ncelebration, held at the historical Gedung Joeang '45 building in
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Aside from Sonny, Commission for Missing Persons and Victims
\nof Violence (Kontras) member Usman Hamid and actress-cum-activist
\nWanda Hamidah were also in attendance.<\/p>\n
Walhi, which was established on Oct. 15, 1980 in Jakarta by 10
\nnon-governmental organizations with support from the then
\nministry of the environment and population, has developed into a
\nlarge, popular and influential non-governmental organization.<\/p>\n
At present, the organization has 26 provincial branches with
