        "content": "<p>Wainggai's relatives insist on autopsy<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Relatives of Thomas Wapay Wainggai, an Irian<br>\nJayan separatist leader who died in Cipinang penitentiary on<br>\nTuesday, insisted yesterday on an autopsy witnessed by the<br>\nInternational Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC).<\/p>\n<p>Yusal Samuel Wonatorey said the ICRC office in Jakarta has<br>\nagreed to the request and the autopsy would be performed today at<br>\nthe Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The body of 59-year-old Wainggai, who was sentenced to 20<br>\nyears in jail for proclaiming a West Papuan State in 1988, was<br>\nstill at the hospital's morgue yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Wainggai's son, Salomon, said on Wednesday an autopsy was<br>\nvital to establish the cause of his father's death.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities have not yet pronounced the cause of his death<br>\nbecause of delays in the autopsy.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the Cipinang penitentiary, Mintardjo, said Wainggai<br>\ndied as he was being taken to the Police Hospital in Kramat Jati<br>\non Tuesday night after he fell unconscious.<\/p>\n<p>He had been vomiting and complaining all night but refused to<br>\nbe taken to the hospital, insisting on seeing only an ICRC<br>\ndoctor, Mintardjo said.<\/p>\n<p>Wainggai was arrested when he led about 60 Irianese to<br>\nproclaim the establishment of the West Papua state at Mandala<br>\nfootball stadium in Jayapura in December 1988. He was convicted<br>\nthe following year and later transferred to Cipinang prison.<\/p>\n<p>He had impressive academic credentials, obtaining a master<br>\ndegree in law from Okayama University, Japan, in 1969 and a<br>\ndoctoral degree on public administration from Florida State<br>\nUniversity in 1985.<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta Police spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna questioned the<br>\nrelatives' insistence on ICRC doctors witnessing the autopsy.<br>\n\"I wonder why they don't trust our doctors,\" he asked.<br>\n(imn\/bsr\/04)<\/p>",
