Wahid's son-in-law submits complaint<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: The local chapter of the Alliance of Independent
\nJournalists (AJI Yogyakarta) told a media conference here on
\nFriday that Erman Royadi, the husband of Alissa Qotrunnada
\nMunnawaroh, the first daughter of President Abdurrahman Wahid,
\nwas one of nine persons and institutions who complained about
\nmedia reports last month.<\/p>\n
Kari Triaji, a staff member at AJI Yogyakarta's advocacy
\ndivision, said Erman came to his office last month to complain
\nabout many media reports, which he (Erman) claimed caused
\ndistrust among kyais (Muslim preachers) in the 35-million-strong
\nNahdlatul Ulama (NU) and encouraged suspicion in the presidential
\npalace. The NU is the largest Muslim organization, and was
\nchaired by Abdurrahman Wahid for 15 years before he was elected
\nPresident.<\/p>\n
\"Erman said that many members of the media had quoted
\nstatements from vague sources, causing suspicion among the
\nPresident's aides (in the palace),\" said Kari at the media
\nconference held here at Ambarrukmo Palace Hotel.<\/p>\n
The practice of attributing statements to vague sources such
\nas in \"according to a source at the presidential palace\" or
\n\"according to a source at the NU Central Executive Board\" has
\nbeen disturbing, Kari quoted Erman as saying.<\/p>\n
AJI Yogyakarta established a complaint post on June 11, 2001,
\nin a bid to accommodate people's grievances over certain media
\nreports. The policy was also meant to evoke people's awareness
\nthat taking legal steps was more suitable than mass action in
\nreacting to particular news reports.<\/p>\n
The first stage of the complaint-period was closed on July 11.
