W. Java administration to build southern port<\/p>\n

The West Java provincial administration, as part of a grand plan
\nto embark on several infrastructure projects, will build a
\n\"modest\" international fishing and commercial harbor near
\nCikalong, Tasikmalaya in the southern part of the province, to
\nhelp boost economic ties with Australia and other countries.<\/p>\n
The port, which will be facing the Indian Ocean, is expected
\nto boost trade of coal and other minerals, textiles, handicrafts
\nand other goods with Darwin, and other Australian cities, the
\nadministration announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n
At a press conference, West Java Governor Danny Setiawan
\nrevealed a plan to commence massive infrastructure projects in
\nthe province to help ignite its economy, so it could grow by
\naround 8 percent in the next five years, from the current rate of
\naround 5 percent.<\/p>\n
The port, according to Brussels-based consultant PA Asia Ltd.
\n-- which helped the administration in developing the port
\nbuilding plan -- would be built in stages.<\/p>\n
Such stages were needed so that the capital and operational
\ncost requirements could be managed within a competitive level and
\nthe financing burdens would be acceptable to the province's
\nbudget.<\/p>\n
The firm further elaborated that to ensure a modern and well-
\nrun port that contributes to overall economic development, it
\nneeded to be connected to other parts of the Southern region.<\/p>\n
Therefore, private investors and donors were invited to
\nparticipate in just the road development part of the project,
\nexcluding the harbor development, it said.<\/p>\n
\"By developing Cikalong port, the underdeveloped southern
\nregion of West Java could be opened up for further development,\"
\nsaid PA Asia Ltd. board member Rio D. Praaning Prawira
\nAdiningrat.<\/p>\n
Rio, whose grandfather came from Tasikmalaya, was particularly
\nconcerned with the fact that the economic development of the
\nSouthern part of West Java had historically lacked behind the
\nnorthern part.<\/p>\n
The firm also helps the province prepare a West Java
\nInfrastructure Summit in August, which will mark the offering of
\nsome 50 infrastructure projects throughout the province worth Rp
\n150 trillion.<\/p>",
