        "content": "<p>VP rejects KPI license powers<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Vice President Jusuf Kalla said on Tuesday that the<br>\nIndonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) should focus on<br>\nmonitoring the broadcast media instead of seeking power to handle<br>\nbroadcasting licenses.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing a national meeting of the commission, Kalla said<br>\nthat the question of broadcasting licenses came within the<br>\ngovernment's domain.<\/p>\n<p>The debate over which institution should have the right to<br>\nissue broadcasting licenses began under the Megawati<br>\nSoekarnoputri administration, with both the government and KPI<br>\ninsisting on maintaining their stances.<\/p>\n<p>The government says it will keep its power over the<br>\nbroadcasting sector as the Broadcasting Law does not specifically<br>\nauthorize the KPI to issue licenses.
