        "content": "<p>Volunteers clear garbage on Bidadari Island<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): High school students, teachers and other<br>\nenvironmental volunteers clear garbage from the Beaches of<br>\nBidadari Island in Jakarta Bay.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsored by Unesco, LIPI (Indonesian Institute of Sciences)<br>\nand GE Elfun (a volunteer group formed by General Electric), the<br>\nactivity is part of a campaign to instill the spirit of<br>\ncleanliness and conservation among students.<\/p>\n<p>About 60 students and teachers from six high schools in<br>\nJakarta took part in the one day program on Saturday, that also<br>\nincluded discussions on preserving the environment.<\/p>\n<p>At almost the stroke of noon, about 50 high school students<br>\naccompanied by teachers and volunteers moved from the conference<br>\nhall and gathered on the beaches of Bidadari Island.<\/p>\n<p>Defying the blistering mid-day sun, the high-spirited group<br>\ncollected garbage dumped by visitors or washed ashore from<br>\nJakarta. Carrying bags made of old newspapers, they separated the<br>\n&quot;organic&quot; rubbish from the &quot;inorganic&quot; as volunteers and teachers<br>\nasked them.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We mean to do something real like cleaning the environment<br>\nrather than organizing seminars, which often lacks concrete<br>\nfollow-up actions,&quot; said Ani Raharjo of GE Elfun.<\/p>\n<p>The trip to the Thousand Islands also took the students to the<br>\nnearby Onrust Island to have a close look at the ruins of<br>\nhistorical sites there.
