Volunteers clear garbage on Bidadari Island<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): High school students, teachers and other
\nenvironmental volunteers clear garbage from the Beaches of
\nBidadari Island in Jakarta Bay.<\/p>\n
Sponsored by Unesco, LIPI (Indonesian Institute of Sciences)
\nand GE Elfun (a volunteer group formed by General Electric), the
\nactivity is part of a campaign to instill the spirit of
\ncleanliness and conservation among students.<\/p>\n
About 60 students and teachers from six high schools in
\nJakarta took part in the one day program on Saturday, that also
\nincluded discussions on preserving the environment.<\/p>\n
At almost the stroke of noon, about 50 high school students
\naccompanied by teachers and volunteers moved from the conference
\nhall and gathered on the beaches of Bidadari Island.<\/p>\n
Defying the blistering mid-day sun, the high-spirited group
\ncollected garbage dumped by visitors or washed ashore from
\nJakarta. Carrying bags made of old newspapers, they separated the
\n"organic" rubbish from the "inorganic" as volunteers and teachers
\nasked them.<\/p>\n
"We mean to do something real like cleaning the environment
\nrather than organizing seminars, which often lacks concrete
\nfollow-up actions," said Ani Raharjo of GE Elfun.<\/p>\n
The trip to the Thousand Islands also took the students to the
\nnearby Onrust Island to have a close look at the ruins of
