Volcano eruption kills three<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Three people have died and hundreds of hectares
\nof fields and plantations have been damaged since the initial
\neruption of the Karangetang volcano in Sangihe Talaud regency,
\nNorth Sulawesi, last Sunday.<\/p>\n
At least 392 residents of nearby Dame village have been
\nevacuated since volcanic lava, followed by an outpour of smoke
\nand flame, continued to pour down from the crater of the 500-
\nmeter-high volcano, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Follow-up volcanic flows have instilled fear among local
\nresidents as there are thousands of cubic meters of volcanic
\nmudflow still trapped at the crater. The lava could overflow
\nanytime and drown nearby lower villages.<\/p>\n
"We are still evacuating people from dangerous areas and have
\nbeen calculating the material loss inflicted by the eruption,"
\nhead of the Siau Timur subdistrict, N. Bawengan, said.<\/p>\n
Provisional reports of damage showed that 3,830 coconut trees,
\n3,901 nutmeg trees, 739 clove trees and 50 coffee trees have been
\ndestroyed by volcanic lava. (imn)<\/p>",
