Volcanic ash still covers Malang<\/p>\n
MALANG, East Java: Volcanic ash emitted by Semeru Mountain has
\nbeen covering the city of Malang, some 90 kilometers south of
\nSurabaya, for about one month, leaving people worried about their
\nhealth.<\/p>\n
Residents said the dust was not very thick, but motorists and
\npedestrians had to use masks to avoid possible eye irritations
\nand respiratory problems.<\/p>\n
"I have to put glasses on during my activities outdoors," Ana,
\n40, was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The 3,676-meter Semeru volcano, on the border between Malang
\nand the town of Lumajang, is the highest mountain in Java. It is
\none of hundreds of active volcanoes on the island.<\/p>\n
The dust originates from thick black smoke which has been
\nfrequently discharged by the volcano recently.<\/p>\n
Residents blame strong winds for blowing the ash about.<\/p>\n
Blackish dust covers the roofs of all buildings and open
\nspaces in the tourist resort of Malang. The situation has made
\nthe residents reluctant to leave their homes. Most of them will
\nnot open their windows and doors, fearing that the dust will
\nspoil the rooms in their houses.<\/p>\n
So far, local health centers have yet to receive complaints
