\u201cAllowing volcanic ash to accumulate on a car is highly detrimental\nand risks permanently damaging the vehicle, because volcanic ash\ncontains silica with a sharp texture and sulphur that is extremely\ndestructive if left for too long,\u201d Yannes said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
He explained that the sharp, abrasive silica particles can cause\ndamage if left attached to the vehicle for an extended period.<\/p>\n
He recommended that cleaning of volcanic ash on vehicles be carried\nout carefully so that the sharp silica particles do not rub against the\nvehicle\u2019s surface and cause scratches.<\/p>\n
According to Yannes, vehicle owners should begin the cleaning process\nby rinsing the vehicle with running water.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy rinsing with a large volume of running water without any contact\nfrom a sponge or cloth at all, the abrasive particles can be dislodged\nas quickly as possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
