The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region II\nhas detected that volcanic ash from the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau\nhas covered parts of Jakarta, Banten and West Java as of Sunday (6\/9) at\n09.00 WIB. This finding is based on analysis of Himawari-9 RGB satellite\nimagery.<\/p>\n
Responding to this condition, the Head of the West Java Regional\nDisaster Management Agency (BPBD), Teten Ali, issued a number of\nadvisories for the public to minimise health impacts from volcanic ash\nfall.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf volcanic ash fall occurs, the public is advised to wear masks to\nprotect their respiratory tracts. In addition, use glasses or eye\nprotection when doing activities outside the home,\u201d said Teten on Sunday\n(6\/9).<\/p>\n
Teten also asked residents to reduce outdoor activities while ash\nfall is ongoing. He recommended that doors, windows and home ventilation\nbe tightly closed to reduce ash entering indoor spaces. \u201cAvoid driving\nif visibility is impaired,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The public was also reminded to clean ash carefully without shaking\nit so that it does not become airborne again. BPBD asked residents to\ncontinue monitoring official information from PVMBG\/Geological Agency,\nBMKG and local BPBD.<\/p>\n
In addition to the ash distribution, BMKG Bandung Geophysical Station\nalso followed up on public reports regarding booming sounds heard in the\nGreater Bandung area on Saturday (5\/9) in the early hours, around\n00.30\u201305.00 WIB. Based on monitoring data checks, the following are\npoints from BMKG\u2019s analysis:<\/p>\n
Head of the Bandung Class I Geophysical Station, Dr.\u00a0Suaidi Ahadi,\nemphasised that the booming sounds did not indicate any earthquake\noccurrence in the Greater Bandung area. Local weather phenomena were\nalso assessed as not significant enough to trigger the sounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe eruption activity of Mount Anak Krakatau was indeed detected\nfrom satellite imagery and significant lightning activity around GAK.\nHowever, because the wind direction during the eruption blew from East\nto West, the booming sounds likely originated from another source and\nstill require further study,\u201d concluded Suaidi.<\/p>\n
