Vocal LIPI scientists won't be punished<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Institute of Sciences will not take
\npunitive measures against 19 researchers who demanded
\npresidential change on Tuesday, an official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Head of the institute Soefjan Tsauri said instead he
\nappreciated the concern shown by the researchers.<\/p>\n
\"The joint statement in fact represents their responsibility
\ntoward the country, and they are just trying to express it,\"
\nSoefjan was quoted by head of the institute's bureau in charge of
\ntechnology and sciences socialization, Amru Hydari Nazif, as
\nsaying.<\/p>\n
\"As an institution, we will not impose any punishment on them,
\nalthough there may be pressure to do so from external parties,\"
\nSoefjan said.<\/p>\n
He did not elaborate on who the external parties could be.<\/p>\n
As employees of the state institution, the researchers are
\nmembers of the civil service and, therefore, are obliged to
\naffiliate themselves to the ruling political organization Golkar.<\/p>\n
Amru said that the institute tried to ensure that all
\nscientists working for it carried out their jobs in accordance
\nwith their respective expertise, with minimal curbs on their
\nfreedom.<\/p>\n
\"Nevertheless, the head of the institute always feels he is
\nthe first man to be held responsible for researchers' findings,\"
\nAmru told Antara.<\/p>\n
The 19 scientists said on Tuesday that a new president was
\nneeded if the country was to heal its ailing economy.<\/p>\n
They were skeptical that the nation could be led out of its
\ndire economical position by a government under President Soeharto
\ndue to the bureaucracy's stubborn defiance for comprehensive
\nreforms.<\/p>\n
They said they were ready to brave all consequences following
