A viral video has emerged showing a promotion for alcoholic beverages\nthat challenged festival-goers to recite a surah from the Qur\u2019an. In the\nfootage, a booth for an alcoholic drink brand at a music festival is\nseen holding a memorisation challenge for Surah Ad-Dhuha. Visitors who\ncould recite the surah were reportedly offered a prize believed to be\nalcohol. The recording shows a visitor reciting the verses of Surah\nAd-Dhuha in front of other attendees, followed by applause from the\ncrowd around the booth upon completion.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has strongly condemned the act.\nMUI Fatwa Division Head, Prof KH Asrorun Niam Sholeh, stated that the\nmarketing gimmick combining holy verses with alcoholic beverages\ncontradicts religious values, ethics, and the law. \u2018Such an action\ncannot be justified, whether from a religious, moral, ethical, or legal\nstandpoint. The perpetrators must be held accountable for their\nactions,\u2019 Niam said, as quoted on the MUI Digital page. The Professor of\nIslamic Jurisprudence at UIN Jakarta explained that the Qur\u2019an is the\nhighly sacred Kalamullah (Word of God) and reciting it is a form of\nhigh-value worship. Conversely, alcoholic drinks are explicitly\nforbidden in the Qur\u2019an. According to Niam, creating a gimmick of\nreading the Qur\u2019an with the lure of an alcohol prize is a form of\ndemeaning the sanctity of the Qur\u2019an.<\/p>\n
The event organiser, The Sounds Project, has also spoken out\nregarding the incident, joining in the condemnation. \u2018We as the event\norganiser are also angry, disappointed, and condemn this behaviour. We\nhave never and will never condone behaviour that makes religion a\nsubject for challenges or product promotion in any form,\u2019 The Sounds\nProject stated via its official Instagram account. The organiser\nconfirmed the incident was not in accordance with their direction or\napproval. They have reprimanded the sponsor and demanded a thorough\nresolution of the case. The organiser also stated it will oversee the\nresolution process and identify the individuals directly involved so\nthey can be held accountable.
