However, Leopold Oscar Nelwan, a lecturer at the Faculty of\nEngineering and Technology, IPB University, has emphasised that these\nclaims lack adequate scientific evidence. Leopold warned the public not\nto easily trust information that is not supported by robust\nresearch.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, while there are studies examining the use of\neucalyptus oil as a fuel blend, these involve specific oil\nspecifications and scientifically designed compositions. These studies\nsuggest that, in certain proportions, such oil can improve certain\nengine performance parameters and reduce emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is different from the practice circulating among the public,\nwhich involves adding small amounts of commercial eucalyptus oil into\nvehicle tanks. To date, there is no sufficient scientific evidence that\nthis method can consistently increase the fuel efficiency of standard\nproduction vehicles,\u201d stated Leopold, as quoted from the official IPBL\nwebsite.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that eucalyptus oil consists of various volatile organic\ncompounds, with the main component being 1,8-cineole or eucalyptol. When\nmixed with petrol, these compounds can indeed affect fuel properties,\nsuch as volatility, octane rating, and combustion characteristics.\nHowever, the extent of these changes depends heavily on the composition\nand the amount used.<\/p>\n<p>Leopold emphasised the importance of distinguishing between a fuel\nblend and a fuel additive. He noted that a fuel blend is used in\nproportions ranging from several per cent to dozens of per cent to\nsignificantly alter fuel properties. In contrast, additives are added in\nvery small concentrations and must have a specific mechanism of action\nto be effective. Currently, there is no scientific explanation proving\nthat commercial eucalyptus oil works through such a mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the unproven benefits, Leopold warned of the potential\nrisks of using commercial eucalyptus oil as a petrol mixture. He noted\nthat the composition of commercial products can vary between\nmanufacturers and they are not designed as fuel components. The impact\non mixture stability, deposit formation, compatibility with fuel\nsystems, and the long-term durability of injectors and engine components\nstill requires further research.<\/p>\n<p>As scientifically proven methods to save fuel consumption, Leopold\nsuggested that vehicle owners maintain tyre pressure according to\nrecommendations, perform regular maintenance, use oil and fuel according\nto manufacturer specifications, reduce vehicle load, and adopt smooth\ndriving styles without excessive acceleration and braking.<\/p>",
