Violence society<\/p>\n
In Jakarta the house of Philipus Kia Lejab, the suspected
\nmurderer of Rohadi's wife and three children in Bambu Apus, East
\nJakarta, has been destroyed. Even the houses of several of his
\nrelatives in Bambu Apus were set on fire.<\/p>\n
In Surabaya, a band of people attacked the Wonorejo
\nneighborhood, where the mayor of Surabaya lived. The reason was
\nthat, earlier, a group of people from Wonorejo had attacked and
\ndestroyed the house of Andy Soedirman, a member of Surabaya's
\ncity legislative council. Now the people who call themselves
\nsympathizers of Andy Soedirman are taking revenge.<\/p>\n
Those two cases show that the \"culture of violence\" still
\nprevails in our society. Cases in which people take the law into
\ntheir own hands, for whatever reason, are very much to be
\nregretted. Even against those who are actually guilty there is no
\nreason for people to take any action whatsoever, much less
\nagainst people who may not even be proven to be guilty. The
\nprinciple of the presumption of innocence applies in this
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
It seems that people are becoming increasingly impatient with
\nthe legal process, which often appears to be sluggish and over-
\nconcerned with searching for material truths. Others prefer to
\nlook at the phenomenon from another point of view: that of the
\nincreasingly pitiless competition in the social and economic
\nspheres.<\/p>\n
Without any intention of belittling those two theories, we
\nmust view the two cases mentioned in a proportionate manner.
\nDestroying anybody's house is a violation of the law. They
\ndeserve the attention of all of us; our law enforcement
\nauthorities in particular. Unless tackled without delay they
\ncould develop into something worse.<\/p>\n
