Violence continues in West Kalimantan capital<\/p>\n
PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan (JP): Violence continued in
\nPontianak on Monday, with local residents and Madurese refugees
\nengaging in gunfights following Sunday's arson attack on the
\nmakeshift houses sheltering refugees in a local sports stadium.<\/p>\n
The clashes on Monday took place near the Sutan Syarief
\nAbdurrahman Stadium and on Jl. Purnama.<\/p>\n
Antara news agency reported that local residents and refugees,
\narmed with homemade guns and traditional sharp weapons such as
\nmandau (a Dayak traditional weapon) and clurit (a Madurese
\ntraditional machete), engaged in running battles.<\/p>\n
Neither the security authorities or the local administration
\ncommented on the violence.<\/p>\n
Two people were reportedly killed in the violence and three
\nothers injured. The two bodies were found on Jl. Tanjungpura and
\non Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan.<\/p>\n
The news agency also reported that local residents attempted
\nto set fire to the stadium, which houses some 300 Madurese
\nfamilies who fled bloody clashes in early 1999 in Sambas.<\/p>\n
Following the clashes, the authorities attempted to evacuate
\nthe Madurese refugees, but they refused to be moved, said the
\nchief of the Alam Bhanawanawai Military Command, Col. S.
\nSimanjuntak.<\/p>\n
The Madurese refugees were split over the plan to relocate
\nthem due to uncertainty over their fate in the new locations.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile in Palu, the spokesman for the Central Sulawesi
\nPolice, Adj. Sr. Comr. Agus Sugiyanto, said the attack on the
\nvillage of Kawua on Sunday which claimed two lives and left three
\nothers seriously wounded was perpetrated by a group from outside
\nthe area.<\/p>\n
\"The armed group came from outside Poso and fled the town
\nshortly after the attack,\" Agus said, quoting a report from Poso
\nPolice chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Djasman Baso Opu.<\/p>\n
During the incident on Sunday, the attackers became involved
\nin a gunbattle with security personnel, but the assailants
\ncarried away their wounded and dead, Agus said.<\/p>\n
Poso remained tense on Monday, with residents gathering in
\nstrategic locations in the town to anticipate any further
\nattacks.<\/p>\n
A resident said: \"We don't want to be taken by surprise
\nagain.\"<\/p>\n
Some 30 gunmen, dressed in black, stormed houses in Kawua
\nvillage and fired randomly on residents in the early hours of
\nSunday.<\/p>\n
Two people, Army First Sgt. Rudy Ilam and civilian Kuster
\nLakola, were found dead with gunshot wounds and slash wounds
