        "content": "<p>Violence against women increases<\/p>\n<p>PADANG, South Sumatra: Violence against women in West Sumatra<br>\nhas increased by almost 50 percent in the last six months.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, 47 cases were reported to the West Sumatra Police.<br>\nThis year, from January to June, the number of cases was already<br>\n33.<\/p>\n<p>First Insp. Erlin Nurlaena, from the Special Care Unit (RPK)<br>\nof West Sumatra Police, said that the increase was caused mostly<br>\nby financial problems, as many husbands had lost their jobs<br>\nduring the economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>She therefore urged the provincial administration to allocate<br>\nfunds to Jati police hospital in Padang to provide treatment for<br>\nwomen who had become victims of violence.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital needed the funds because it could only afford to<br>\npay for its regular running costs and medical workers.<\/p>\n<p>Touching on the legal issue and counseling for women victims<br>\nof violence, Erlin said that so far the RPK had been cooperating<br>\nwith several non-government organizations concerned about women's<br>\nissues, like LBH APIK and Nurani Perempuan. --Antara<\/p>",
