Villareal reports newspaper<\/p>\n

American lobbyist Michael A. Villareal filed a police report
\nagainst The Asian Wall Street Journal on Friday, claiming the
\ndaily defamed him in a story that appeared in its April 5
\nedition.<\/p>\n
Villareal filed the complaint against managing editor Peter
\nStein, editor Reginald Chua and reporters Peter Fritsch and
\nTimothy Mapes.<\/p>\n
Villareal's lawyer, Hotman Paris Hutapea, said the newspaper
\nwrote an article calling his client an armed robber based solely
\non an e-mail the daily received from Villarreal's former wife,
\nLousia Ibbotson.<\/p>\n
\"The fact is that my client has never been found guilty by any
\ncourt. The newspaper should have checked the court records
\ninstead of relying solely on an e-mail sent by a brokenhearted
\nwoman before printing the story,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In its April 5 edition, the Journal wrote that in 1989
\nVillarreal \"ran afoul of the law when he was arrested in Panama
\nCity, Florida, and charged with armed robbery. He was sentenced
\nto probation and community service tutoring kids at Camp David
\nGonzalez, a detention center in Calabasas, California\".<\/p>\n
Hotman said his client did receive a sentence from the court,
\nbut for a different case.<\/p>\n
\"He was only found guilty because he did not report a crime
\ncommitted by his friend,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Villareal also filed police complaints against his ex-wife and
\nhis former employer, Harvey Goldstein, the owner of PT Harvest
\nInternational Indonesia, for passing false information to the
\nnewspaper.<\/p>\n
Hotman said Villareal sent a warning letter to the newspaper
\nasking for Rp 100 billion in compensation.<\/p>\n
Villareal made headlines here after he was connected with a
\nbribery case involving U.S. agricultural giant Monsanto, and
\nafter he left his then-pregnant wife and became engaged to
\nactress Sophia Latjuba.<\/p>",
