        "content": "<p>Villages to be submerged for reservoir<\/p>\n<p>BANJARNEGARA, Central Java (JP): Nine villages covering 950<br>\nhectares in three districts of Banjarnegara regency will be<br>\nsubmerged next year to provide a reservoir for a hydro-electric<br>\npower plant.<\/p>\n<p>Regent Nurachmad told The Jakarta Post yesterday that the<br>\nMaung project started in 1981 but stopped two years later because<br>\nof budget cutbacks as the government introduced belt-tightening<br>\nmeasures.<\/p>\n<p>The project will recommence next year and should be completed<br>\nby 2000, Nurachmad said.<\/p>\n<p>He did not say whether the villagers have agreed to give up<br>\ntheir land for the project, but most residents in the nine<br>\nvillages said they are ready to be relocated as long as they are<br>\ngiven land of the same size.<\/p>\n<p>\"We prefer relocation to transmigration,\" resident Suparmo<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Transmigration is the government's program of resettling<br>\npeople from crowded Java to other islands in the Indonesian<br>\narchipelago.<\/p>\n<p>The hydro-electric power plant will have a capacity to<br>\ngenerate 1,000 megawatt of electricity, more than five times the<br>\ncapacity of the nearby Mrica hydro-electric plant.<\/p>\n<p>The new project, which will rely on tributaries of the Merawu<br>\nRiver, will supply electricity to the Java grid. It will also be<br>\nable to supply electricity to Bali and other islands to the east.<\/p>\n<p>With the Maung project, the Banjarnegara regency will be home<br>\nto three hydro-electric power plants.<\/p>\n<p>The third plant is currently under construction in Tulis, and<br>\nshould be completed next year.<\/p>\n<p>The Tulis plant, being built at a cost of Rp 60 billion, will<br>\nhave a capacity of 12.4 megawatts, according to project chief<br>\nAlam Hakim.
