        "content": "<p>Villagers threatens PT RIFI<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Local residents in Kemtuk Gresy <br>\nsubdistrict, Jayapura Regency, have threatened to force the <br>\nsuspension of operations at PT RIFI, a forest concessionaire <br>\ncompany which has refused to give them compensation for their <br>\nland.<\/p>\n<p>Hendrik Trapen, spokesman for residents of Banggahi, Iwon and <br>\nOmon villages in the subdistrict, said the joint-venture company <br>\nhad to pay compensation to village residents as the vast forest <br>\narea in which it operated belonged to the three villages.<\/p>\n<p>He said the company, owned by the Kayu Lapis Indonesia Group, <br>\nhad felled millions of cubic meters of logs since 1995. Local <br>\nresidents, however, had not been given compensation for their <br>\nland and no locals had been employed in the company.<\/p>\n<p>\"The company should fulfill its promise to the local people <br>\nover land compensation,\" he said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>He warned the villagers would force company' employees to stop <br>\noperations if the company failed to respond to their demand. <br>\n--Antara<\/p>",
