Villagers run amok over cash aid<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: Dozens of disadvantaged people in Kronjo
\nsubdistrict, Tangerang regency, ran amok on Friday morning,
\ndemanding that they too be given the quarterly Rp 300,000 cash
\nhandout from the central government.<\/p>\n
They destroyed the subdistrict administration's offices and
\nthen demanded that the subdistrict head appear before them.<\/p>\n
Fuad, a member of Village Representative Council (BPD) who
\nwitnessed the incident, said that the crowd arrived at about 9:30
\na.m.<\/p>\n
\"After 15 minutes shouting for the money, the angry residents
\nbegan hurling stones at the subdistrict offices, breaking all the
\nwindows. They then broke into the offices and smashed everything
\nthey found,\" he said.<\/p>\n
None of the subdistrict officials dared to intervene.<\/p>\n
Subdistrict head Sutrisno said some of the attackers had been
\ndetained by police and were still being questioned.<\/p>\n
He said he had tried to explain to the public that his office
\nwas not in any way involved in the registration of those entitled
\nto receive the cash assistance.<\/p>\n
Four hundred of the village's population of 1,000 residents
