Villagers block Caltex road<\/p>\n

Residents of the village of Jurang, Rokan Hulu regency, Riau
\nhave blocked the main access road to an oil field owned by
\nAmerican PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia, according to a company
\nsenior executive.<\/p>\n
Caltex spokesman Poedyo W. Oetomo announced on Wednesday that
\nthe road block occurred on Tuesday afternoon and was intended to
\nmount pressure on Caltex to asphalt the village's roads, which
\nare used by the company for its daily operations.<\/p>\n
The locals complained about the amount of dust caused by the
\nunsurfaced road and argued that Caltex was responsible for
\nimproving the road.<\/p>\n
Local people also confiscated 20 pieces of heavy equipment
\nbelonging to the company, Poedyo said.<\/p>\n
Poedyo added that Caltex is basically reluctant to asphalt the
\nroad because the road is mostly used by illegal loggers, which
\nthe company holds responsible for the damage caused to the road.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, Caltex reached a settlement with the villagers
\non Tuesday, agreeing that the company would asphalt some parts of
\nthe road.<\/p>\n
But, some villagers did not appear satisfied and called on
\nothers to block the road.<\/p>\n
Poedyo said Caltex operations went on as usual while
\nnegotiations with the villagers were in progress.<\/p>",
