A massive fire has broken out at the Putri Cempo landfill in Solo, Central Java, affecting large sections of the waste site. While the fire poses a significant challenge for firefighters, local authorities report that nearby residential areas remain safe for the time being.

A massive fire struck the Putri Cempo Landfill in Mojosongo Village,
Jebres District, Solo, Central Java, on Wednesday (2/9) night. The
flames spread rapidly across the massive mounds of waste at the largest
landfill in the Soloraya region.

Observations at the scene showed that dozens of fire engines had been
deployed from both Solo City and Karanganyar Regency. Hundreds of
personnel were seen climbing the waste mountains to combat the
continuously spreading flames.

The Head of Mojosongo Village, Katarina Kartika, stated that reports
regarding the fire incident at the Putri Cempo landfill began arriving
at approximately 18:00 WIB. “I received a call from the Head of RW 30
saying that Putri Cempo was on fire. After that, the Head of RW 39 also
called me,” Katarina said at the location.

The fire was visible amongst the waste piles in Blocks C and D of the
landfill. Fortunately, Blocks C and D are located far enough from RW 30
and RW 39, which are the nearest residential areas to the landfill,
meaning the fire does not yet threaten the safety of residents. “It is
still safe. For now, it remains safe,” said Katarina.

Nevertheless, the Solo City Government continues to coordinate to
anticipate the worst-case scenario. The Regional Disaster Management
Agency (BPBD) has coordinated with Mojosongo Village to establish a
public kitchen. Additionally, medical teams from the Solo City Health
Office and volunteers are on standby at the site.

“The BPBD contacted us earlier regarding the establishment of a
public kitchen in the village. Furthermore, medical teams and volunteers
are already on standby,” Katarina added.

At this time, the cause of the fire in Blocks C and D of the Putri
Cempo landfill remains unknown. According to Katarina, fires at the
Putri Cempo landfill are common during the dry season due to extreme
weather. “This happens annually. Every year, it is like this. However,
in the past, there were no large-scale fires like this; there was only
smoke, which was promptly extinguished,” said Katarina.
",
