Village chiefs protest protests<\/p>\n
KEBUMEN, Central Java: More than 450 village chiefs and
\nsubdistrict chiefs from the Kebumen area held a rally against
\nGolkar at the local administration office here to seek protection
\nagainst their own residents now frequently protesting against
\nthem.<\/p>\n
They claimed that they had long been servants of Golkar but
\nwere now being treated with disdain by residents who participated
\nin almost daily protests against them.<\/p>\n
The chiefs decried the fact that Golkar seemed to offer them
\nlittle support in the face of such widespread criticism.<\/p>\n
Efforts to meet with the Kebumen regent failed since he was in
\nJakarta attending the dominant grouping's extraordinary congress.
\nThey eventually met with the administration's secretary,
\nSoepardjo.<\/p>\n
One village chief, Pranoto, complained that over 63 villages
\nin the area had been the scene of vigorous demonstrations.<\/p>\n
\"You know that we have only been carrying out Golkar's
\ninstructions all this time. Why have we now become targets?\" he
