Village chiefs ask for allowance hike<\/p>\n
ALOR, East Nusa Tenggara: A number of chiefs in remote
\nvillages in the province have complained over their small
\ngovernment allowances, warning that they could generate
\ncorruption.<\/p>\n
Head of Helandohi village on Alor Island Hermanus Lika Sali
\nand his Pandai counterpart Rahman Abdullah said on Wednesday they
\ndeserved a bigger annual allowance because of their status, which
\nsometimes required them to work day and night.<\/p>\n
\"We have to serve the public round the clock, but who cares
\nabout how we can feed our families. We demand that the government
\npay us according to national salary standards,\" Hermanus said.<\/p>\n
He said the inadequate allowance had led some village heads to
\nembezzle rural development funds.<\/p>\n
The current state budget allocates Rp 45,000 for each village
\nhead's annual allowance. The East Nusa Tenggara provincial
\nadministration has set an additional allowance for each village
\nchief of Rp 150,000 for the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n
Village heads do not earn salaries from the government because
\nthey are not part of the bureaucracy.<\/p>\n
Ngada Regent Albert Nong Botha told visiting provincial
\nlegislature members recently that many village heads in the
\nregency refused to take part-time work. (yac)<\/p>",
