Everyone,<br>\nit seems, is jumping on the \"get Wiranto\" bandwagon. Why? Because<br>\nhe was head of the Indonesian Military at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Surely a leader can only wield so much influence over his<br>\nsubordinates. Pak Wiranto, as far as I understand, responded<br>\nappropriately and professionally to each and every crisis during<br>\nEast Timor's protracted and traumatic balloting. He consistently<br>\ndispatched and alternated troops, including officers with each<br>\ncrisis.<\/p>\n<p>Pak Wiranto should not, as the case now seems, be held<br>\naccountable for mercenary rogue elements within the forces. He<br>\ndid his job to the best of his capabilities, and with what<br>\nresources he had at hand at the time.<\/p>\n<p>We have a saying in the west: You can lead a horse to water,<br>\nbut you can't make him drink.
