        "content": "<p>Vietnam sets up ASEAN offices<\/p>\n<p>HANOI (AFP): Vietnam has set up two new government<br>\norganizations to coordinate its activities within the Association<br>\nof Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a report said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet ordered the establishment of a<br>\nNational ASEAN Committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime<br>\nMinister Tran Duc Luong to organize policy, the official Vietnam<br>\nNews Agency said.<\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Ministry has also set up a National ASEAN<br>\nSecretariat and all ministries will be required to set up offices<br>\nthat will be coordinated by the Government Office -- a central<br>\nministry presided over by the premier, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam joined the association in July at a meeting of foreign<br>\nministers in Brunei, becoming the seventh member of an<br>\norganization originally founded in 1967 out of fear of Hanoi's<br>\nambitions in the region.<\/p>\n<p>There were fears among the other members -- Brunei, Indonesia,<br>\nMalaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand -- that Vietnam<br>\nwas not ready to join the group because of its poorly trained<br>\nbureaucracy.<\/p>",
