        "content": "<p>Vietnam set to join ASEAN<\/p>\n<p>HANOI (Reuter): Vietnam expects to join the Association of<br>\nSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN) next year and there are no<br>\npolitical or economic obstacles to membership, Foreign Minister<br>\nNguyen Manh Cam said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>ASEAN foreign ministers agreed in July to give Vietnam active<br>\nsupport to become a full member in 1995, he told Reuters in an<br>\ninterview.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam will be the first communist member of the association<br>\n-- which groups Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines,<br>\nSingapore and Thailand -- and, on entry, will have the weakest<br>\neconomy.<\/p>\n<p>\"Economically, there is a certain disparity in the level of<br>\ndevelopment between Vietnam and the ASEAN countries,\" Cam said.<br>\n\"Politically there are some differences in political regimes.\"<\/p>\n<p>He said China supported Vietnam's membership and was itself<br>\ntrying to improve relations with ASEAN.<\/p>",
